Towers of Babel

I love taking in all the sights the District of Columbia has to offer. Second best is taking in the tourists taking in the sights! In the past few weeks I've seen more Europeans than I ever did during my time abroad (this is an exaggeration- artistic creativity, I'm running with it). My first week living here a poor Japanese man came up to me with a map begging for directions. I still have no clue where he wanted to go, the map he was pointing so desperately at was sooooo not in English and when you combine my horrible sense of direction with general newness to the area he could not have approached a worse person.

Still, this was my time to be a diplomat for America! It was my civic duty to help this tourist. I squint at his map, look around blindly for a street sign, anything which will help me figure out what the hell I'm doing, there is nothing. I look again at his map, and poke knowingly at the small drawing of Dupont Circle surrounded by Japanese, "That," I tell him, "is somewhere over there" with an offhand gesture that lands somewhere near CVS, and walk off as fast as I can. Hopefully the next opportunity I have to represent this great nation runs a little smoother.

Being surrounded by so many different languages is waking up my need to travel! Until then, I'm going to close my eyes, sit back, eavesdrop and pretend I'm in France!

Today I moseyed off to see some of the memorials on The Mall.

 Holla, Jersey!

Reflecting pool, my isn't it reflective?! Normally it's full of water and lovely but (whomp whomp) it was leaking so they drained it.

Honest Abe just hanging in his crib.

 Vietnam War Memorial

Construction is everywhere!!

Oh my god this salad. I pity you all for not getting to eat it (not that I would share), really I do. I'm throwing caution to the wind with my Low Residue Diet (because, lets be honest, it really sucks). Ulcerative Colitis be damned, let there be veggies and fruits!

I'm starting to run out of stuff to do here! I feel like I've been to every Museum in town. Suggestions good people!

Now if you will excuse me I'm off to paint my nails something glittery :)

  32. Haha, that story about the Japanese tourist is sort of funny... Also makes me hope never to come across you if I ever happen to go to DC and get lost there... Well, but my map would be in English and I speak that language, plus, it would be in the future, when you are better acquainted with you new home, so I guess things would work out just fine.

  47. Ohhh my god, I love everything about these posts! I'm such a picture whore and I love that you took so many pictures. Your stories about your diplomatic duty cracked me up too - and that salad looks RIDICULOUS (especially considered that all I've eaten so far today is Diet Coke, so now my stomach is growling in anger over the fact that I haven't had a delicious salad like that!).
